Your wedding shoes have a long day ahead of them. They walk you down the aisle, stand through photos and greetings, and then keep going on the dance floor until the last song. A beautiful pair that hurts after an hour will spend most of the night under a chair. Here is how to choose wedding shoes that look right in the pictures and still feel good when the music starts.
1. Be honest about heel height
The best heel height is the one you already walk in comfortably. If you wear flats every day, a very high heel on your wedding day is a big jump. Many brides find that a mid heel of around 3 to 6 cm gives the lift they want for photos while staying easy to dance in. If you love a higher heel, choose it, but practise in it at home first.
You can compare styles on our Shop by Heel Height page, where shoes are grouped as flat, mid and high.
2. Look at the shape of the heel, not only the height
A thin stiletto and a block heel of the same height feel very different. A wider heel spreads your weight, feels steadier on grass, tiles and stone floors, and is kinder to your feet during long hours of standing. If your venue is outdoors, in a garden or on uneven ground, a block heel or a flat is usually the safer choice.
3. Choose straps that hold your foot
When you dance, your foot moves forward and sideways. Shoes with an ankle strap, a slingback or a closed front keep the shoe in place, so you are not gripping with your toes to stop it slipping off. Open mules and backless styles are lovely for the ceremony, but many brides change into something more secure for the party.
4. Get the size right before the big day
Feet often swell a little by the evening, especially in warm weather. Try shoes on in the afternoon, and check that there is no pressure on your toes and no rubbing at the heel. Measure your foot and compare it with our size guide before you order.
5. Break them in at home
New shoes are rarely at their most comfortable on the first wear. Wear your wedding shoes around the house for short periods in the weeks before the wedding, with socks at first if you like. This softens stiff areas, shows you where you may need a small cushion or plaster, and helps you get used to the height.
6. Think about the dress
Bring your shoes, or at least shoes of the same heel height, to your dress fittings. The length of your dress is usually hemmed to the heel you will wear, so changing heel height later can make the dress too long or too short. If your dress covers your feet, comfort can come first. If your shoes will show, you may want a pair that works as a detail in your look.
7. Plan a second pair
There is no rule that says you must wear one pair all night. Many brides wear an elegant heel for the ceremony and photos, then change into a flat or a lower heel for dancing. If you do this, choose two pairs in similar tones so the change looks planned. Keep the second pair in a bag with a trusted friend or family member.
8. Do not forget the bag
A small clutch or evening bag keeps the essentials close: lipstick, tissues, a few plasters and your phone. Choose a colour that works with your shoes and dress. Our Shop by Colour and Outfits pages can help you put the look together.
