Ordering shoes online is easy when you know your size. Yet sizes can vary between countries and even between styles, so a few minutes with a tape measure can save you a lot of guesswork. This guide explains how to measure your feet at home and how EU, UK and US women's sizes compare.
How to measure your foot at home
You will need a sheet of paper, a pen or pencil, a ruler or tape measure, and a wall.
- Measure later in the day. Feet naturally expand a little during the day, so measuring in the afternoon or evening gives a more realistic result.
- Place the paper against a wall. Put it on a hard, flat floor with one edge touching the wall.
- Stand on the paper. Wear the type of socks or tights you usually wear with the shoes, and place your heel gently against the wall, with your weight evenly on both feet.
- Mark the longest point. Ask someone to mark the tip of your longest toe, or carefully do it yourself while keeping the pen straight.
- Measure the length. Measure from the edge of the paper to the mark in centimetres.
- Repeat with the other foot. It is very common for one foot to be slightly longer. Always use the longer measurement.

Tips for finding the right fit
- Between two sizes? For closed styles such as escarpins, loafers, sneakers and boots, many women prefer the larger size. For open styles such as sandals and mules, the closer size is often comfortable.
- Consider the toe shape. Pointed toes can feel snugger at the front than round or square toes.
- Think about heel height. Higher heels place more pressure on the front of the foot, so a secure, comfortable fit across the toes is especially important.
- Account for socks. If you plan to wear sneakers or boots with thicker socks, measure with them on.
- Know your foot width. If your feet are wider, adjustable straps, soft uppers and open styles can offer more ease.
